The comedy of the trunk, followed by Taken for each other - Ariosto / Pauline Rougier
Academic work - Theater
La Cassaria (The Comedy of the Chest) and the Suppositi (Taken for Each Other) were performed in the playful atmosphere of the Carnivals of 1508 and 1509 organized by the court of Ferrara. Ariosto's first two comedies, written in prose, are also the first regular comedies in the vernacular in the history of Italian theater.
In The Coffin Comedy, two young men, aided by their servants, seek to be united with their beloveds.
Taken for Each Other tells the story of the exchange of identities between a young man in love and his servant.
This edition aims to shed light on the historical and literary context of the composition of the plays, by situating these comedies in the theatrical panorama of the time, while explaining certain translation criteria in the postface.
