Testimony

Little Nahamane was not rich. His only fortune was a plumb line, a spinning top, a pair of shorts, a boubou and a pair of sandals. Together we went up to Zouerate to look for his family. [...]

Early in the morning, the train arrived. I don't know why, we messed up and the train started to leave without us. It was very serious! We risked staying in the desert and dying of heat under the sun. Without thinking, I decided to take it on the move. I ran with my backpack and jumped onto the step of an ore wagon. Nahamane, less fast than me, had trouble climbing. While holding on to the ladder, he almost fell onto the track, dragged a foot on the ground and lost a sandal. He finally managed to hoist himself up but the sandal was lost! Perhaps his only wealth?

Amazed, I saw him then take the one that remained and throw it into the sand, where the first one had fallen.

“But why are you doing this?”

Looking surprised, he answered me:

"A sandal is no use to me. He who finds them might as well find both!"
